Dias Solo Run Part 2

 UNIVERSE

So, uhh...remember when this was a challenge run?

Yeah, I don't! :D

Now, granted, they were blocking more of his hits, and granted, they were taking longer to put down. But this was simply not enough to stem the tide of Air Slashes flying in their direction.

What they did do was make him burn through more of his Blackberries. This wasn't a problem during fights itself, but did cost him more time summoning birds than I'd have liked. Well, good job being an inconvenience, enemies!

The Crimson Devil buffed his damage so much the Ring of Might felt downright redundant! I swapped it for a Sacrificial Doll, as I consider it the strongest defensive accessory in the game. Sure, there are accessories with stronger individual effects, but it's hard to beat resistance to all elements alongside a free revive!

Dias was so strong I skimped on stocking up on certain normally essential consumables, like Fruit Syrups and Illusion Dolls. While he was strong enough to fight without them, their absence was definitely felt - even besides their sheer healing power or stat boost, it's hard to deny the convenience of a Fruit Syrup or Mixed Syrup restoring both HP and MP at once!

But he was strong, and while the increased stats did cause a few minor fumbles, there was little meaningfully challenging him. As such, I found myself rushing through the game, trying to get to another character as soon as possible.

During this run, I also found that Square Shift 1 was better than Escape Shift for most battles on Universe. It had a smaller Avoid boost, but many enemies and especially bosses got so much extra evasion that the Hit boost on it actually make a considerable difference.

In more interesting news, I also reran Claude sometime before this. My general opinion of him did improve, but only slightly - the Battle Suit was definitely a trap in his run, Mithril Meshes are definitely much better. Being able to equip fighter gear is great too, the Crested Shield and later the Shield of Athena are worth their weight in gold. Naturally being able to craft both of the Berserker Ring and the Ring of Might is also an amazing bonus.

Buuuut his regular attack is still of middling speed, too risky to use against bosses like the Beam Trio or Haniel. His special moves don't really make up for it, Air Slash is his only reliable long range move. Helmetbreak, Knuckle Burst and the Phase Gun are all good, but have odd quirks that make them unfit for generalized use. Overall, he fares out to be above average, generally strong but never overwhelmingly powerful. It will be interesting to see how he fares against the rest of the cast.

Dias' journey ends here. Tune in next time for someone who's hopefully more interesting and challenging to play. Until then!

Caster of Magic for Windows School Evaluations: Nature

Recently, Hadriex made a video  covering combinations of two magic schools in Caster of Magic for Windows(henceforth called Caster of Magic 2, or CoM 2 in short). While it was a good effort, I feel like he didn't go into as much depth as I would've liked: combining schools of magic is actually a very complex and nuanced decision, especially when deciding how many books to use from each school. The choice of retorts also complicates this, as they provide a very significant boost to the early and mid game of several wizards, if picked correctly. And, like most strategy games, the early and middle portions are some of the most significant - if your wizard takes off early and stays strong through the middle, they get a lot more territory and power, which later leads to them mobilizing strong armies more effectively. So, I've decided to take a look at the subject myself. To do this, I've decided to first look at the strengths and weaknesses of each school accurately, before

Caster of Magic For Windows School Evaluations: Sorcery

Some of you might remember that I had started evaluating the magic schools in this game to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. I picked Nature as that was a fairly straightforward school. The rest...aren't quite so clear cut, but they still have themes they try to convey via their design. Anyway, it's now time for.... SORCERY Sorcery loosely represents the forces of wind, water and most importantly, magic itself. Its summons have great control over water, and it manipulates wind to make units fly and even become swift transports themselves, but by far their most impactful spells are magical tricks that undermine the "rules" of battle. As such, Sorcery very much is the realm of trickery...and it kind of has to be, as it has little power backing it up. When they work, they work very well, netting it amazing rewards and letting it crush its foes with ease. But when they don't , it is in deep trouble. Now, it does have some nifty logistical spells too, and th
