My Story with Freebird Games

Just in case the topic comes up again, I want this to be posted as a record of my experience with Freebird Games, why I spent so much time trying to analyze their Sigmund Corporation games despite not liking them much. The story can be summarized as such:

  • I used to be a big fan of Freebird Games' stories, back when I was a teenager and was pursuing my B. Tech. I greatly looked forward to A Bird Story, and remember buying it day 1 and greatly enjoying it. Hell, I'm pretty sure my name is still on the betatesting credits for Minisode 1 (it's Dev J Chand, in case you're wondering ;) )!
  • However, because of circumstances, I got busy with other affairs, and eventually lost touch with them.
  • I returned to the fandom in late 2021 or so.
  • I wished to try Kan Gao's games in release order, out of curiosity, as I remembered precious little about them, only that I liked them back in the day.
  • I tried Quintessence - The Blighted Venom and enjoyed it a fair bit, despite its obvious shortcomings and such.
  • I tried the various small games he released (Did You Remember My Lullaby?, The Mirror Lied, the current unfinished version of Lyra's Melody) and liked them to varying degrees.
  • I tried To the Moon and was completely let down by it, given all the hype and my previous experience with his games.
  • I then spent too much time trying to analyze why it didn't work, in a space where most people didn't care and likely viewed it as me being a tryhard (the official Freebird Games discord, to be clear).
  • I tried Finding Paradise and liked it okay, I definitely didn't complain much about it anywhere.
  • I tried Impostor Factory and got disappointed again.
  • I tried to get into the community at the discord, but at this point my image had likely been damaged by trying to "analyze" the games, and so I was constantly treated as a "hater" and my opinions were constantly dismissed.
  • I gradually got frustrated, especially since Kan kept announcing blatant filler games for the To the Moon "franchise", and started hurling abuses in frustration. That was not proper on my part, and I apologize, but at the same time, I feel like someone should've tried and realized my frustration.
  • For a brief moment, it looked like the company was going to get things back on track, with the beach episode acting as a definitive ending for the doctors' side of things, and most of the other participants in the discord being mostly genteel. But then Merlandese, one of the developers (though not a main developer) ended up hurling abuses at me, and so I got disgusted and left.
  • I was willing to leave the matter there, but then Merlandese, in an act of total cowardice, decided to assassinate my character behind my back by quoting nasty things I said out of anger and frustration, while doing zero effort to understand why I said those things, instead dismissing me arrogantly as just a "hater" and a "troll".
  • In retaliation, I returned to post an angry retort, and also retaliated by posting on With Dream's page about how much I was looking forward to it more than the RPG. Which ofc provoked nasty comments like this:

I think that succinctly covers why I am no longer interested in the community, or in the TtM RPG. A small part of me holds out hope for a completed remake of Quintessence: The Blighted Venom, but given all the abuse I've had to endure, and the patchy track record Kan's stories have had with me post Quintessence, I'm not putting much stock into it.

That is all.

About Me

I am Dev Jyoti Chand, a man of many interests. Chiefly, I like playing video games, specifically, strategy 4xes, strategy RPGs, and adventure games. My favorite games are Master of Magic, Tactics Ogre, specifically the SNES/PS1 version, and Quintessence - The Blighted Venom. I also am very interested in learning about history, especially ancient and medieval history, and am ever curious to learn more about the world. This blog is mostly a grab bag of subjects I felt strongly enough about to dedicate words upon words. Most notable among them are a series of challenge runs of the Star Ocean 2 remake, a long form commentary on To the Moon that I am not particularly proud of these days, and, more recently, LPs of the classic Mana games . I am ever eager to talk about my interests, and am very accepting of feedback, as long as it is given in good faith. The Aerian Court Intrigue 1 - Child's Play

I've been streaming Quintessence  on odd days, usually the weekends, in my chatroom, and it's been quite enjoyable going through it with someone else. While the game has some noticeable flaws, especially with its really confused and slow start, it still remains a very intriguing and compelling story, especially for being Kan's first outing.  Of note, the middle portion of the story is a large, delicious pile of scheming, intrigue and revelations. I plan to cover it through my small series here, hopefully highlighting its great moments well for everyone else to see. The Setup The story centres around a drug, naturally called "Quintessence". It was developed by a brilliant physician for Aeria. Aeria is one of the two huge empires of this setting, the other being Prion. We're not given much information about the latter, though it is implied to be roughly similar in power to Aeria. Anyhow, they had plundered a foreign land(which looks roughly like a fantasy take o...
